The small tortoiseshell butterfly is one of the more widespread butterflies in the UK and is often seen in gardens. Nettles are important as they are the food source for the small tortoiseshell caterpillars. They are one of relatively few of our butterflies to hibernate as an adult butterfly, so it is not unusual to find them coming indoors in the autumn. Having a wild corner in your garden will help small tortoiseshell butterflies as well as numerous other species, including hedgehogs.
